A collection of made in Scotland sgian dubhs for highland dress

Sgian Dubhs

View our collection of hand crafted Sgian Dubhs. The Sgian Dubh is a small single edge knife with a wooden or leather bound hilt worn in your kilt hose on the same side as your dominant hand as part of your Highland dress. Originally the sgian dubh would be used to prepare food and other basic tasks. The name 'sgian-dubh' comes from Scottish Gaelic, and can be translated as 'black blade', or 'hidden knife'. The sgian dubh is a smaller version of the 'sgian-achlais', or, 'armpit knife', which was commonly concealed under the armpit.
