Follow these steps to build your own custom bespoke dress sporran by Margaret Morrison.
Choosing your fur & pelt
The first step in building a bespoke full-dress sporran is choosing the fur. This tends to be the hardest decision for most; do you want your sporran to be a neutral pelt so that you can change your accessories down the line then seal skin will be the one for you as it will suit a range of colour schemes. Or perhaps you want to make a bold statement that draws everyone’s attention to your kilt then the silver fox is undoubtedly a best seller. Nailing the pelt will ultimately influence your decisions about other colours that will be involved in your sporran.

Selecting metal work for your custom sporran
The metal work which we sporran makers refer to as the sporran cantle is the decorative metalwork that sits as the crown jewel on your dress sporran. Choosing a sporran cantle can seem over whelming and if you need any advice, we are happy to give our opinion on what we think goes best otherwise choose away. We have over 28 cantles to choose from. These are all available in what we call chrome which is a shiny metal finish or antique finish which is matt silver, we also have some metal work available in copper and antique brass. Not sure what to choose in terms of metal finishes? Well, have a look at other accessories in your kilt outfit are the buttons on your jacket shiny? What metal is your kilt pin or sgian dubh? The metal finish you choose will also be the same colour we make your chain strap and the tassels that sit on the front of the sporran.

Picking the Perfect Leather
Choosing the leather is easier than choosing the pelt, the exterior leather is any leather that is showing on your sporran which will be the back of the sporran and underneath the sporran cantle. Your chain or leather strap will also be made in the same leather colour. The rules of highland wear have drastically changed from only offering brown or black leather options so don’t be afraid to set out your comfort zone and try a new colour, you’ll be surprised how subtle hints of colour can complement your tartan. We offer a choice of 18 leather options to choose from, from our matt grey leather to our luxury new cognac leather we have something for everyone. You can view our full leather range here.
Choosing the suede for your custom sporran
The suede interior is for your eyes only, so don’t be afraid to add some colour to the pallet. The interior of your dress sporran is lined with our luxurious suede which has a pocket for your card, notes and a key fob to attach your house key to so you don’t have the rummage at the end of the night looking for them. We have also lined the front of the sporran with pocket, so you don’t catch your fingers on the split rings or damage your phone. We offer 8 suede interior colours to choose from.

Add personalised engraving to your custom sporran
This is where you truly become the designer of your dress sporran. We can laser engrave your cantle, the leather targe or the back of your sporran. Whether it’s your clan crest, a wedding date or a custom logo, our sporran makers use laser precise technology to make it permanent. Need some inspiration for custom engraving you can have explore what other customers have choose for their bespoke sporran here.

Choosing the bells for your custom sporran
Finally, is the final decoration of the dress sporran, the sporran tassels. We have a range of sporran bells to choose from, from classic Celtic cones to Scottish thistles to stag heads. It is always a nice touch to upgrade your tassels bells from the plain bells to bells that match the metal on your dress sporran. Lastly think what formation you would like your tassels to sit, do you like the straight chain design where they lay flat on the sporran, or do you prefer the uniformity of the cross-chain design where they are in a diagonal formation.
